The recent Wikileaks postings included one US Embassy cable that references the US policy of suppressing the price of gold, as well as China's policy of accumulating more gold. In the link below, there are three cables. The one regarding gold is the third one.

This gives us some insight into the thinking of the two governments, and is also part of the basis of the present currency wars.
